The Billy

The most challenging ride is the 109km Billy, featuring some of the most demanding climbs and exciting descents in this part of the Peak District. After a steady and joyous loop up to and alongside the grandeur of Stanage Edge, you drop into the Hope Valley and wind along to Edale and the monumental Mam Nick. Every cyclist must do this climb once.

After hot drinks and snacks, a beautiful spin through White Peak gorges and stunning villages take you to the welcome feed station at Monyash. Fortified with homemade flapjack, cakes local veggie and sausage rolls etc. the road to Youlgreave beckons. After an exciting descent, the road turns left at Darley dale. This year a landslip has closed Beeley Moor (or Hell Bank as it’s known locally) so we have decided to celebrate our 10th year with the iconic Rowsley Bar. As #34 in 100 Greatest Climbs, this is a test for Tom Pidcock let alone us mere mortals and, at 80 km in, it’s not going to be pleasant! The top two switchbacks are lung-busters and the drag after a leg breaker. A challenge but a massive tick – spot prize for the best time in our Strava Club.

There is more to come and the final climb up Froggat Road, still to be finalised due to waterworks, takes you up one last time before the cruise back to event centre and food!

The Nanny

The mid-route, all signed and on mostly quiet roads, the Nanny is a 54km tour suitable for reasonably fit adults and takes in some of our most stunning scenery and natural beauty as well as a killer climb!

The Kid – Family Ride

The Kid is a very special signed family route of about 18km that will take in quiet roads and rough tracks. You will enoy a snack stop and a beautiful 2km section on private forest trails linking Bank Top and Mag Clough farms.

There will be a tarmac only option and this route can be extended or shortened easily – variations posted the week before. Full support including ‘emergency’ pick up if needed!

The ‘Untethered’ Gruff Gravel 2022

Added to The Grindleford Goat Cycle Sportive in 2019,The ‘Gruff Gravel’ Ride has ‘sold out’ well before the previous three events. This year, with Alpkit Hathersage support, there is NO LIMIT to entries.

We believe in a relaxed start where you register and go in your own time, maybe after a butty and complimentary espresso. This allows us to stretch out the riders and keep the tracks and trails free for you and your mates to enjoy. It’s not a race!

In 2021 we went deep into the White Peak on green lanes, quarry tracks and drove roads. Previous forays went North into the Dark Peak, often over tough, off-road tracks shared with our MTB community. After feedback, last years loop emphasised the gravel roads and trails we have in abundance in the South Peak and was well received, a ‘Strada Bianchi’ for the Derbyshire Dales but with all the time you need to enjoy the views (and, if needed, the pub gardens!).

The 2022 route will be shared 7 days before the Goat event; GPX and TPX files will be sent to entrants with support getting the route onto your device. Advice on terrain, food and drink stops, equipment and conditions will be updated.

All participants will register from 9 a.m. then are free to set off individually or in small groups in your own time, leaving the roadies to queue in their roadie pens 😉

Not without considerable interest, the proposed route will be a challenge and given our unique location, has views and byways to to ride for. Get some gravel miles in before the day!
